What are skinboosters?

Skinboster treatments are microinjections of either hyaluronic acid or PN ( PolyNucleotides) used to achieve a dewy luminous complexion, or to repair skin. There are several types of Skinboosters on the market, each with different properties and ingredients to suit your skincare concerns.

How many types of Skinboosters are there?

The first clinical grade Skinbooster was by Restylane, commonly termed “水光针”. It contains 20mg/ml partially cross-linked hyaluronic acid chains. This provides hydration from deep within the skin layers to firm and plump up the skin.

Juvederm Volite is another type of hyaluronic acid-based skinbooster, containing 12mg/ml of cross-linked hyaluronic acid per syringe. Juvederm skinboosters use patented Vycross™ technology to make their hyaluronic acid injections last a longer time.

Rejuran type skin boosters (Healer), also termed ” 婴儿针” contain PN (PolyNucleotides). These are salmon DNA-derived molecules that stimulate fibroblast activity in the skin to synthesize the extracellular matrix and collagen regrowth to repair your skin. Rejuran also works as a free radical scavenger to reduce oxidative damage to the skin.

How do Skinboosters work?

Hyaluronic acid ( HA) is a naturally-occurring substance that is part of the skin support matrix. It has a remarkable ability to attract and hold onto 1000x its weight in moisture. Hyaluronic acid levels in the skin directly correlate with many important functions including water retention, efficient skin healing, plumping and cushioning effect to support the skins structural components.

With ageing, the hyaluronic levels in the skin decline and the skin loses its ability to retain water resulting in loss of firmness, pliability, and the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. When used topically, HA works as an excellent surface moisturizer. However, it is unable to penetrate deeply into the skin to build the skin matrix. Skinboosters are able to directly reintroduce hyaluronic acid into the skin to reverse these signs of ageing.

How soon can I see results?

Results of skinboosters treatment may vary based on your skin condition.

Typically, a hyaluronic acid skinbooster tends to show results within 1-2 weeks of treatment, as it has immediate hydrating effects.

The effects of Rejuran type skinboosters may take slightly longer to manifest due to the time required for the skin to rejuvenate and repair itself. Results usually show after 3-4 weeks of the procedure.

How often do I have to repeat this treatment?

Depending on the type of skin booster used, the recommendations for the frequency of injections may differ.

Restylane and Rejuran type skinboosters are best given as monthly injections for 3-4 months; this treatment cycle is repeated every 9-12 months depending on skincare needs.

Volite skinbooster injections are usually done as a single injection every 9-12 months.

Is there any downtime for Skinboosters?

As skinboosters are injected superficially into the skin, there might be small bumps that look like mosquito bites that quickly disappear within 24-48hours. Commonly there will be very tiny injection marks and mild diffused redness that my last about 3 – 5 days. Occasionally, there may be some bruising that usually resolves within 1 week.

To minimize the risk of bruising, It is advisable to avoid foods/ medication that can cause blood thinning the week before injections. These include: Ginseng, ginko, vitamin E, fish oils, traditional Chinese medicine, alcohol, aspirin.

After treatment, it is recommended to avoid strenuous exercise, jacuzzi/ sauna/ steamrooms, facial massages, and alcohol for at least 24hours.

Is it painful?

We all have different pain thresholds – to reduce the discomfort of the procedure, numbing cream is usually applied before skin-booster treatments.
