Ultherapy Face Lifting & Tightening

An FDA-approved high-intensity microfocused ultrasonic device, Ultherapy has multiple proven benefits when it comes to skin tightening. It is the first of its kind in using focused beams of ultrasound beams to remodel collagen and tighten the skin from within. Ultherapy has pioneered a wave of non-invasive face lifting procedures such as the HIFU.

How does Ultherapy work?

Depth in skin the Ultherapy can reach

Depth in skin the Ultherapy can reach

Ultherapy is the only HIFU device that allows direct visualization of specific skin structures, with its DeepSEE® transducers. This transducer allows focused ultrasound beams to target specific structures on the face and neck while visualization helps to better guide treatment.

The Ultherapy targets 3 layers of the skin for superior lifting, at 1.5mm, 3.0mm, and 4.5mm. These treatment depths are able to treat the SMAS/Platysma (4.5mm), Deep Dermis (3mm) and Superficial Dermis (1.5mm). (The SMAS layer is the layer a surgeon would target on for a traditional, invasive facelift.)

Because Ultherapy uses ultrasound technology (the same ultrasound waves that are used to visualize a baby in a mother’s womb), the depth at which the treatment takes place is very precise – to the millimeter. It differs from lasers and radiofrequency that interact with the surface of the skin before reaching its target – ultrasound bypasses the superficial layer of the skin to focus on the target tissues deeper in the dermis and SMAS.

The ultrasound beams heat up the tissue to ~65°C, causing immediate collagen contraction and denaturation. This initiates new collagen production- neocollagenesis. Over 90-180 days, the wound-healing response leads to skin lifting and tightening, with results that can last a year or more.

Which areas can the Ultherapy be used on?

Ultherapy has been indicated to be safely and effectively used on the full face – areas such as:

  • Cheeks
  • Jowls
  • Eye & Brow Area
  • Forehead
  • Neck & Double Chin

Ultherapy treatments are usually classified by the area (full face, half face or eyes) and the number of shots administered. For a full face treatment, it typically requires around 500 to 800 shots (depending on the area of coverage required and skin laxity).

What effects should I see after one Ultherapy session?

Right after treatment, you may see some temporary lifting of the jowls and cheeks due to swelling and collagen contraction. But over time, the jowls will appear smaller and the face more contoured as new collagen is formed and the skin becomes firmer and tighter.

It takes about 8-12 weeks for the optimum results to be seen.

Your cheeks will be lifted and give the middle of the face a more youthful appearance. The double-chin area will be tightened and the appearance of neck wrinkles there will be minimized. The tired brow and upper eyelids can be effectively lifted with Ultherapy as well.

Is Ultherapy painful? Is there any downtime?

The procedure is non-invasive and no cuts or injections are required, there should not be burning or charring of the skin. Some people get a mild pinkish-redness after the treatment that lasts an hour, this is due to the heat from the treatment. You will not need to take time off work as there is little to no downtime from Ultherapy.

The majority of people tolerate Ultherapy with just some anaesthetic cream / numbing cream applied half an hour before treatment. Some others will require local anaesthetic injections to further reduce the discomfort.

How long does one session of Ultherapy take?

Each session, inclusive of numbing, should take approximately 60 – 90 minutes.

Who will benefit from Ultherapy treatments?

Anyone with mild to moderate skin laxity over the cheeks and brows will benefit from Ultherapy.
Typically, such signs of aging start in the thirties. People with loose skin under the neck may also see improvements in skin laxity.

How long will the results of Ultherapy last?

Typically, most people continue to see the great lifting effects of Ultherapy up to 1 year after the treatment. In some people, this effect lasts longer. Smaller sessions of Ultherapy can be done in the interim maintain the taut skin and lifted face achieved with your first session of Ultherapy.
